A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a child.
The Summer Lunch Program has kicked off with plans to serve thousands of low-income children in Lakota this summer! Summer Lunch is an outreach partnership of the Faith Alliance with Butler County Success, Lakota Child Nutrition, Mission Possible and many other community volunteers, groups and organizations. Last year through a USDA grant, Lakota was able to provide the lunches via their Food Bus to the lunch sites with volunteers assisting and focusing on mentorship activities. With almost 3,400 students in Lakota on free and reduced school lunch, there is even more need for additional volunteers Monday through Friday over the summer.
Serving as a volunteer at one of our 7 summer lunch sites can be a wonderful way of making a difference to a child. You have an opportunity to encourage, share your faith, have fun and be a mentor to these kids who often times are alone during the day. The lunch sites served by the Food bus this year include, Princeton Village Mobile Home Park, Meadow Ridge Apartments, Lakota Lakes Apartments, Deer Run Apartments, Gettysburg Mobile Home Park, Countryside Mobile Home Park and Liberty Junior School.
In addition, Faith Alliance began a Summer Lunch Literacy Program in 2015. This year, we will take 30 low-income children in first and second grades who struggle with reading into our 6 week Reading Program offered at Union Elementary and Woodland Elementary Schools. Professional teachers with more than 50 years teaching experience will lead this fun, hands-on, camp-style program along with paid college interns.
Summer Lunch Sites are residential neighborhoods mostly apartment complexes or mobile home communities. Five out of the seven sites the children must eat outdoors with no shade or picnic area to sit on. We are now asking for donations to provide the lunch sites with funding for sun shelters and picnic tables that will enable the children to eat lunch and be mentored in a much more comfortable setting. If you would like to donate to the sun shelter/picnic fund, send a check made out to “Faith Alliance” write “sun shelter” in the notes, and mail to Faith Alliance, PO Box 806, West Chester, OH 45071.
