Summer Literacy Students Celebrate at Zoo

On July 14, 2017, a group of 25 students and teachers from the Faith Alliance Summer Lunch Reading Program, celebrated the end of their 6 week program by visiting Fiona, the newest addition at the Cincinnati Zoo! The kids had a wonderful (and educational!) time! They had plenty of pizza and ice cream to go along with their exciting trip! One little girl was reported as saying to her teacher, “This is the best day of my life!”

29 students had registered for the two Summer Reading classes, sponsored by Faith Alliance, that met for 6 weeks, at Union and Woodland Elementary Schools. The program, led by Jenni Muia and Cynthia Shropshire, both Lakota teachers, targeted 1st and 2nd graders from low-income homes that were in peril of not passing the 3rd grade reading guarantee. MAPP scores from the Spring and Fall will be used to see how well the children held Reading levels during the summer. Four college interns and one high school volunteer assisted with the program. Faith Alliance, in cooperation with Butler County Success and Lakota Schools, has administered the Summer Lunch Literacy Program for the past 3 years.
