Help Us Bring Dignity and Joy Back to Christmas

It is hard to believe that Christmas is less than 2 months away, and for many this festive season of giving and celebrating with family is also a time of financial stress. To help alleviate this strain for local families, Faith Community UMC will be offering a Christmas Shop for the families who attend their Food Pantry and Stepping Forward Free Tuesday Night Dinner Program. Designed to enable parents the opportunity to provide Christmas for their family, the Christmas Shop allows parents to select and purchase a $30-valued gift for their children at a greatly-reduced price.

By offering the gifts at a reduced price, we are giving the parents the dignity to purchase and select the gifts for their children. This event began in response to parents watching their children receive good-intentioned gifts selected by strangers that the parents wished they were able to purchase.  Thus, dignity is restored to them as they are able to purchase the gifts for their children.

How does it work?  Low-income families register in October to shop in the Christmas Shop and for a Christmas food basket.  We then fill the Christmas Shop with age-appropriate $30 -valued gifts.  On the day of the event, Saturday, December 16, 2017, parents arrive to shop while their children make crafts, visit with Santa and sing Christmas carols.  The cost to the parents is based on the number of children in their family.  The gift for the first child is $5.00, the second child’s gift is an additional $3.00, and any additional children’s gifts will cost an additional $1.00 with a max of $10.00.

This Christmas Shop is only made possible through the generous donations of local churches, businesses and individuals. Last year was the second year for the Christmas Shop, and over 250 families were able to select and purchase gifts for their children.

There are many ways to get involved! You or your congregation can help local families afford gifts for their children by providing donations of fun, interactive age-appropriate gifts for the Christmas Shop.
